## World Cup winner

> Having made more than 100 appearances for Crystal Palace and now a regular captain of the side, Marc Guéhi has matured well beyond his years since moving to south London.

He joined Palace in summer 2021, signing a five-year contract with the club, and committing his services until summer 2026.

Guéhi was born in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire and moved to England aged one. He spent much of his early years in Lewisham and began his youth career with Bromley-based Cray Wanderers.

It didn’t take long for Guéhi to attract attention and, aged just seven, he was scouted by Chelsea.

Progressing over the following decade with the Blues, Guéhi did enough to stay at the club year on year and reaped the rewards with an immensely successful peer group.

Winning the treble with the Blues’ Under-18s in 2016/17, Guéhi signed his first professional contract in September 2017 and went on to help Chelsea scoop the quadruple – including the FA Youth Cup and league – that same season.

Guéhi’s Academy team helped to reinforce Chelsea’s image as one of the fiercest youth sides in England, as the centre-back played alongside the likes of Reece James, Tariq Lamptey, Billy Gilmour, Conor Gallagher and Callum Hudson-Odoi.

But it wasn’t just at club level where Guéhi enjoyed success with a noteworthy youth team, as the teenager won the Under-17 World Cup with England in 2017. Indeed, Guéhi captained the Young Lions to the U17 European Championship final that same year and scored in the World Cup final just months later.

These performances ensured Guéhi was rewarded with a taste of first-team football, and he began to be named in Chelsea squads in spring 2019 – being a senior substitute on four occasions in 18/19.

His breakthrough came in the League Cup against Grimsby Town as the Blues stormed to a 7-1 victory with Guéhi in the backline. He again earned professional minutes for Chelsea in a fourth-round defeat against Manchester United, and secured a loan move to Swansea City shortly after.

Guéhi fought to secure his place over a half-season with the Swans that was disrupted by the league’s suspension in March. Having returned from the pause, Guéhi played in Swansea’s final five matches and helped to clinch a sixth-place finish.

Play-off heartbreak came for the first of two times as Swansea lost on aggregate to Brentford in the semi-finals, but Guéhi went on to enjoy personal progression the following season regardless.

2020/21 was something of a landmark for the defender, who returned to Swansea on loan for a full campaign and played 45 games. He became recognised as one of the league’s brightest talents and helped Swansea climb further up the table with a fourth-place finish.

Swansea and Guéhi continued to go one better than 19/20 by reaching the play-off final, but football showed its unforgiving side once again as Brentford overcame them for a second time. Guéhi played in every minute of the three play-off matches.

Guéhi describes himself as “strong, comfortable on the ball and hopefully growing to be a leader one day.”

These traits are evident in his play, with the 21-year-old having captained England Under-21s and made himself a mainstay for Swansea despite being one of the squad’s youngest players.

His attitude became clear when a post-match interview with him went viral across social media. Having earned a spot at Wembley and consecutive Man of the Match awards from Sky Sports, Guéhi humbly rebuked the accolades by saying: “The first time I was really surprised. Now I think it’s getting a bit ridiculous! Everyone was fantastic today, to a man. I could name everyone. For me to get this again, I don’t know.”

On the pitch, Guéhi is assertive and vocal, often heard organising his teammates with confidence. This confidence is reflected in his willingness to drive out from the back and distribute possession from relatively high up the pitch.

His first season in south London saw him feature in all but two of the games in 2021/22, making 42 appearances in total. His first goal for the club came in a chaotic 3-3 draw against Burnley at Turf Moor. Guéhi captained the side for the first time against Watford in February 2022, becoming the youngest player to captain the side since Nathaniel Clyne in 2012.

A month later, he earned his first ever call-up to the full England squad and made his debut in a 2-1 win against Switzerland.

Guéhi continued to be a rock at the heart of the Palace defence in 2022/23, forming a formidable partnership with Joachim Andersen. He was nearly ever-present in 22/23, playing in 40 out of a possible 41 games.

The 2023/24 campaign saw Guéhi again continue as a stalwart at the back, though in the latter half of the season he did suffer a knee injury which kept him out for two months. He concluded 23/24 with 29 appearances in all competitions.

He was called up to the England men's senior squad ahead of the 2024 UEFA European Championship and earned his 10th cap for the Three Lions with a solid defensive display and clean sheet against Bosnia and Herzegovina in June 2024.

Guéhi played a huge role at the heart of the England defence in the 2024 UEFA European Championship, playing every single minute he was eligible for as England finished runners-up in the tournament. He managed to to keep two clean sheets and register an assist for Jude Bellingham's sensational last-minute overhead kick against Slovakia in the round of 16.

Young midfielder **Justin** **Devenny** made his first senior start for Northern Ireland in a friendly defeat away to Sweden.

The 21-year-old was making his third senior international appearance and was handed his first start by manager Michael O'Neill, but was part of a young side which suffered a heavy defeat in the end, as the Green and White Army went down 5-1 at Friends Arena.

Nevertheless, Devenny's 78-minute appearance was one to celebrate, as his breakthrough season continues to go from milestone to milestone.

The youngster had earlier in the window made his second senior international appearance – and first at Windsor Park – as a 69th-minute substitute in Northern Ireland's 1-1 friendly draw with Switzerland.

The 21-year-old previously made his debut for Northern Ireland side back in November as a late substitute against Luxembourg, shortly after his very own debut in Palace colours against Fulham.

Monday proved a memorable night for **Ebere Eze** after scoring his first goal for England in a 3-0 win over Latvia at Wembley.

Arriving off the bench in the 61st minute, Eze’s crowning moment followed just 15 minutes later.

Twisting and turning in the box at speed, his low shot deflected in off Antonijs Cernomordijs to get the Three Lions' third of the night and Eze’s first on the international stage.

In doing so, he became only the second active Palace player to score for England in the club's professional era. He was one of three Palace players in the England squad (none featured against Albania earlier in the window), with **Marc Guéhi** back in the starting line-up and completing the 90 minutes for his 23rd senior cap.

**Dean Henderson** was an unused substitute for the Three Lions, as Thomas Tuchel’s perfect start to the job continued. Reece James and Harry Kane got the other goals on the night.

England’s Under-21s were also in action on the same night, as they faced their Portuguese counterparts in a friendly.

Lee Carsley’s side prevailed 4-2 in a six goal-thriller, with Palace’s **Adam Wharton** coming off the bench in the 71st minute, replacing Hayden Hackney for his third appearance at that level.

The midfielder also played 78 minutes of an eight-goal thriller against France earlier in the international window, suffering a 5-3 defeat on that occasion.

And completing the Palace’s English contingent on Tuesday was **Romain Esse**. He came on at half-time for the England's Elite League Squad (also known as the Under-20s) and played the second 45 minutes in their 2-2 draw with Switzerland.

Esse now has 10 caps at that level, after also playing 72 minutes of the 1-1 draw with Portugal last Friday. The results ensure England’s ELS side are still unbeaten in the 2024/25 season.

Representing the United States once again this window were Palace duo **Chris Richards** and **Matt Turner.**

Both started on Thursday evening – for Turner, a 50th appearance for his country in goal – as Mauricio Pochettino's side were beaten 1-0 by Panama in the CONCACAF Nations League semi-final.

The winning goal in California came deep into injury time, with Richards having already left the field by that stage after he was substituted in the 80th minute.

It was a difficult third-place play-off for the hosts, too, as – with Turner starting, and Richards on the bench – the USA slipped to a 2-1 defeat against Canada.

This was the first iteration of the CONCACAF Nations League which the USA had failed to win, having been triumphant in the competition's three previous editions – but still marked a proud international window for Turner for clocking up half-a-century of caps for his country.

With 16 points from six matches, **Daichi Kamada** and Japan went into a home qualifier against Bahrain in Saitama knowing that a win would be enough to seal a top-two finish in their group – and, in doing so, become the first country in the world to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals.

Having featured in each of Japan's last five matches, Kamada started the day on the bench, but came on after 63 minutes as his side sought out an opening goal.

The Palace midfielder made an immediate impact, making a smart run inside Takefusa Kubo before collecting a square pass and squeezing the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper.

Kamada's strike was his second in Japan's last five matches, and set his side on the way to a 2-0 win which sealed their place at next summer's finals.

The goal was enough to earn Kamada a start in his country's next game several days later: a 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia marked his fourth start in Japan's last seven matches, and his 40th cap overall for his country.

The Palace playmaker played 83 minutes of the goalless encounter, as Japan continued their unbeaten World Cup qualification campaign; they are now guaranteed top spot in their group.

At Under-19 level, **Caleb Kporha** earned a place in the England squad for the first time, ahead of their UEFA European U19 Championship Qualifying triple-header against Wales, Türkiye and Portugal.

In their first match, against Wales on Wednesday evening, the Palace Academy graduate was an unused substitute in a 2-0 win.

In their second outing, against Türkiye, Kporha made his U19s debut and completed the full 90 minutes as the two teams played out a 0-0 draw.

Several days later, Kporha was an unused substitute as an early goal from Sunderland's Chris Rigg secured a 1-0 win over Portugal at the Deeside Stadium – securing the Young Lions a spot at June’s finals in Romania.

The announcements meant that Palace have England representatives in every age group from senior down to Under-16s, with a host of other [Academy international call-ups announced.](https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/academy/march-2025-international-call-ups-fixtures-results/)

Colombian duo **Daniel** **Muñoz** and **Jefferson Lerma** were also in international action this window.

The pair were in from the start as they faced Brazil in Brasília, in a South American World Cup qualifier. Sadly, Lerma and Muñoz didn't quite get the result they wanted, a 99th-minute winner from Vinicius Junior giving the hosts a 2-1 win.

Both completed the full 90 minutes and gave excellent accounts of themselves during a tight game, with Lerma involved in the move that led to Luis Diaz's goal just before half-time.

In the next game, at home to Paraguay, *Los Cafeteros* – with Lerma and Muñoz starting and playing the full 90 minutes again – raced into a two-goal lead after 13 minutes, but conceded twice either side of half-time to eventually draw 2-2.

Despite now being without a win in four, Colombia still occupy an automatic qualifying spot for the World Cup, currently lying sixth in the table – boasting a cushion of five points, with four games to go.

**Ismaïla Sarr** was in action twice for Senegal, who returned to World Cup qualifying action under new head coach Pape Thiaw.

At the weekend, Senegal faced a difficult away fixture at table-topping Sudan, but came away with a credible 0-0 draw in Group B. Sarr completed 79 minutes for the Lions of Teranga before being substituted.

On Tuesday night, Sarr then won his 70th cap for his country, coming off the bench after 74 minutes and playing the closing stages in Senegal's crucial 2-0 win over Togo in Dakar.

The key win keeps Senegal within one point off group leaders DR Congo, with four matches left to play and the group winners securing 2026 World Cup qualification.

The Everton match didn’t go our way, and the scoreline didn’t reflect the full story. But we kept fighting. We had chances, saw players return, and stayed together. That matters.

Arsenal are a top side, full of experience and quality. We know what we’re up against—but we’re not here to admire.

Ahead of Crystal Palace Women's record breaking fixture against Arsenal on Sunday, manager Leif Smerud has sent a message to supporters.

Although Palace previously visited the away changing room at Craven Cottage just last month, winning 2-0 in the Premier League, FA Cup meetings between the two sides are a much rarer event

To date, the two sides have met 53 times competitively, but surprisingly just one of these fixtures took place in England's oldest cup competition.

That was, in fact, also the very first meeting between Palace and Fulham, which took place way back in 1907. The two teams were drawn together in the second round of the FA Cup, with Fulham hosting the original tie.

At the time Palace were playing in the top tier of the Southern League, with the Whites a fully-fledged Football League club in Division Two, meaning the hosts were firm favourites.

But the two sides couldn't be separated on a cold February day, playing out a 0-0 stalemate. That meant it was back to Crystal Palace for a replay just four days later. A George Woodger goal would prove to be the decisive strike, as Palace scored a major cup upset to progress to the third round.

It wasn't quite as seismic a shock as the previous round - Palace had also eliminated Newcastle United at St James' Park, who at the time were one of the strongest sides in the country and unbeaten on home soil for well over a year.

But the win over Fulham was, at the time, another major scalp. Who would have thought then the two sides would have to wait 118 years for their next FA Cup meeting.

However, that was not the only time we have played an FA Cup tie at Craven Cottage. Palace also played a third round replay at the venue back in 1946, against fellow Londoners QPR.

For that season only FA Cup ties, up to and including the sixth round, took place over two legs in a classic home and away format. This was to bring club's extra revenue, with this competition the first after football's resumption following the Second World War.

So when Palace and QPR played out two 0-0 stalemates on the bounce, a third game would be needed. For the record extra-time was played at Selhurst Park following the second leg, but abandoned after seven minutes of further play due to bad light in the pre-floodlight era.

The two were required to meet in a replay at a neutral venue on January 16th, with Craven Cottage hosting. Sadly, it would not prove a successful visit for Palace, who went down to a 1-0 defeat. Hopefully, this Saturday Palace can finally score an FA Cup goal at Craven Cottage... at the third time of asking.

### **Last time out**

As mentioned, Palace have already made the trip to the Cottage in 2025, with the two sides meeting in the Premier League last month. 

It ended up as one of the Eagles' best away days of the season, with an own goal from former Palace man Joachim Andersen and an excellent breakaway strike from Daniel Muñoz securing all three points.

That win means Palace are now unbeaten in their last six games at the Cottage, having last tasted defeat in that particular corner of west London back in 2005.
