100 Years of Selhurst Park

> Full-back Daniel Muñoz signed for Palace from Belgian side K.R.C. Genk having built a reputation across the continent for combining his defensive duties with an attacking prowess going forwards.

Born in Amalfi, a modest town with a population of just over 22,000 in the Antioquia Department in north-east Colombia, Daniel Muñoz’s journey to the Premier League encapsulates the versatility, commitment, and passion he has become renowned for as a player.

Growing up near to Medellín – the second-largest city in Colombia – Muñoz’s boyhood team were Atlético Nacional, his local club and the nation’s most successful side. Pictures would later emerge on social of a teenage Muñoz in the stands, shirtless and roaring his Atlético heroes.

Starting out as a player at the nearby Cosmos Soccer School as a six-year-old, Muñoz moved to Envigado at 12 years of age – the youth department which has produced the likes of James Rodriguez, Freddy Guarín and Jhon Cordoba – before moving to Arco Zaragoza Medellin, one of the most famous amateur teams in Colombia.

But despite a handful of trials elsewhere, including reports of interest abroad, Muñoz reached the age of 20 without having made his professional breakthrough, and was reputedly forced to consider retirement.

Yet Muñoz persisted briefly turned out for regional club, FC Total Soccer, where his displays alerted him to Jose Fernando Salazar – a scout from top-flight club Águilas Doradas – who would later recruit the defender in early 2017.

Muñoz rose quickly to the challenges of the professional game, quickly becoming one of Águilas Doradas’ most important players and making 37 appearances in his first season.

Catching the eye during three years in Rionegro, he played 94 times and scored three goals from full-back – and would fulfil his lifelong dream when coach Juan Carlos Osorio signed him up for Atlético Nacional in 2019.

Once more, his impact was immediate, and before Muñoz had even reached double figures for appearances for Nacional, he had been called up by Colombia coach Carlos Quieroz for friendly matches against Brazil and Venezuela in September 2019, only denied his international debut by injury.

Scoring a remarkable seven goals in 20 league games in his maiden year, Muñoz was named Nacional captain at the age of 23, just six months after joining the club.

He opted to pursue his dream of playing in Europe at four-time Belgian champions K.R.C. Genk – rebuilding after a challenging campaign – ahead of the 2020/21 season, and Muñoz was once again quick to find his feet, starting out in midfield before coming to dominate the right-back position in the team.

The defender played in every one of Genk’s Jupiler Pro League fixtures in his debut year, picking up five assists as his new club bounced back from a seventh-place finish the previous season to mount a title challenge and finish second. The following season, he would help Genk win the Belgian Cup.

After two previous call-ups, Muñoz’s Colombia debut finally arrived in June 2021 in a World Cup qualifier against Peru.

Muñoz remained with the squad ahead of the 2021 Copa América finals in Brazil that month, playing the full 90 minutes in five of his country’s seven games – keeping three clean sheets – as Colombia missed out on a spot in the final after losing to Lionel Messi's Argentina on penalties, but then defeated Peru to finish third.

Last season, 2022/23, was his best in front of goal, as he scored seven times and registered seven assists in just 30 games. He departed Genk having made 148 appearances in all competitions (including 18 in European competition), scoring 19 goals and 20 assists in total.

In his first half-season in red and blue, Muñoz made 14 appearances and recorded four assists. He also scored his first goal for Colombia in a friendly against Spain in March 2023.

Muñoz carried his strong form in red and blue into the 2024 Copa America, where he and fellow Palace teammate Jefferson Lerma finished as runners-up. He opened the scoring for Los Cafeteros in the tournament in a 2-1 win against Paraguay and went on to net a the equaliser in a draw against Brazil and also register an assist in the quarter-final victory over Panama.

In November 2024, Muñoz scored his first ever goal for Palace in some style. In the fourth minute of stoppage time, he headed home a cross from captain Marc Guéhi at the far post to equalise Newcastle United at Selhurst Park, prompting wild celebrations which manager Oliver Glasner also got involved in.

Palace's lengthy unbeaten away run in the Premier League - which had stretched back to October - was ended on Saturday by a Manchester City comeback either side of half-time.

Despite Palace racing into a two-goal lead, City got back level before half-time. Glasner made a tactical switch at half-time, sacrificing forward Mateta for an extra number in midfield, in the shape of Will Hughes.

However, City struck first within a few minutes, through Mateo Kovačić and would control the half. Two further goals ensured a final scoreline of 5-2 in the hosts' favour.

Palace will be given the chance of a quick response on Wednesday night, when making the trip to Champions League-chasing Newcastle United. And Glasner said Mateta had reacted well to the decision.

"I told him \[Mateta\] at half-time that it's a tactical decision," he said. "And I didn't really talk about it anymore because he knew it, he accepted it.

"We have quite a close relationship and of course I told him that he would start again tomorrow \[against Newcastle\].

"So there was nothing really to talk about. I know you take off your number one goalscorer at half-time and it's maybe big headlines for some, but for us it was not really an issue."

Having had a few days to reflect on the outcome in Manchester, Glasner assessed his own decisions and revealed how he would re-energise the team, ahead of another tough Premier League test away from home.

"The season is quite long, with many games. We all have to work now until the end of the season. I think I'll start to recover on May 27, but for now it's just about being always switched on and getting the best \[from the team\].

"But of course after the City game I was very disappointed with myself. I was very disappointed about conceding five goals.

"It's the same for me. But I also have to find the turnaround. When you speak in front of the team it makes no sense for me to be disappointed, because you want to give energy to the players, they need our support, and I mentioned it after the game.

"It's not just about saying 'you did this wrong.' It's now just showing them what we can do better, what we already did better and finding the best solution for us as a team.

"You are the one who gives the energy to the team and this is what you have to find as the manager, where you can get this energy back as quick as possible."

Palace have scored 15 goals from set-pieces this season, the latest coming at the Etihad Stadium when Adam Wharton's perfectly flighted corner was nodded in by Chris Richards.

And for Glasner it's become a key area to focus part of the pre-match preparation on.

"I'm proud of my coaching staff and the players because they are analysing it, they are training it and the players are executing - they're doing such a great job. 

"Whenever a goal is scored from a set-piece then you have to think about it and you have to train it and this is what we started since we arrived and really my assistants and the players, they also can see and feel that it helps us to score goals, it helps us to win games and it's a really great job what they're all doing.

"Michael Angerschmid and Ronnie Brunmayr, my two assistants and one of our analysts are, more or less, responsible for the set-plays.

"Of course it's more of a \[group\] discussion with everyone included. But they're really sitting for hours, every week, watching our set-plays, watching the opposition set-plays and then trying to find the right things, what fits for us.

"And it was Adam Wharton's first assist, as well so there are also things he can improve. But they are all doing a great job."

Since *Glad All Over* was first played over the tannoy at Selhurst Park in January 1964, the song has become synonymous with Crystal Palace, ringing out as the team enter the pitch and whenever they score.

With this special cover version, the DS Eagles are cementing their own place in Crystal Palace history.

This cover of the 1963 hit by The Dave Clark Five marks the culmination of DS GAME ON, a year-long Palace for Life programme designed to help people with Down’s Syndrome develop skills and confidence for employment.

Combining two of the charity’s most successful initiatives – [**DS Eagles**](https://www.palaceforlife.org/project/downs-syndrome-football/), which provides sports sessions for people with Down’s Syndrome; and [**GAME ON**](https://www.palaceforlife.org/project/game-on/), its flagship employment programme, partly funded by the Premier League and Professional Footballers Association (PLPFA) – the project gives participants hands-on experience in a range of job roles.

Recorded over 60 years after the original release in a studio near Selhurst Park, the DS Eagles’ version of *Glad All Over* features guest vocals from Palace players **Chris Richards**, **Aimee Everett**, **Fliss Gibbons** and **Shanade Hopcroft**, alongside Palace for Life coaches.

A behind-the-scenes music video accompanies the release, capturing the recording process and offering a glimpse into the DS GAME ON employment programme that supported the singers throughout the year.

While there is no specific data on how many people with Down’s Syndrome are in work, disability charity Mencap estimates that 65% of people with learning disabilities, Down’s Syndrome included, want to work, yet fewer than 20% are employed.

The first year of DS GAME ON saw 15 participants try out roles in cooking, t-shirt design, caring, barista training and music, proving that given the opportunity, people with Down’s Syndrome can thrive in the workplace. However, barriers like prejudice, limited opportunities, and low expectations still persist.

Palace for Life hope *Glad All Over* will raise awareness, challenge outdated assumptions, and generate funds to support its employment programmes for young people across south London.

The DS Eagles, who are all passionate Palace fans, are part of a wider community supported by Palace for Life, the club’s official charity. Palace for Life, which works with over 16,000 young people each year, running programmes that boost employment prospects, build confidence, and create new opportunities, alongside initiatives focused on mental and physical health, crime prevention, and mentoring.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference – ahead of the Eagles’ second trip to the North in the space of five days – the manager said: “The team’s looking very good. Everyone’s fit and available – just **Cheick Doucouré** and **Chadi Riad** are unavailable.

“**Matt Turner** is back, **Romain Esse** is back, and of course, **Eddie \[Nketiah\]** and **Marc \[Guéhi\]** are back after their suspensions, so it’s good to have all the players available.

“We will go for a win. Of course, we are also considering what we need playing against Newcastle. I watched their game against Man United \[a 4-1 win\]. They were very powerful, with a lot of energy, especially in their stadium.

“They are playing for a Champions League position at the end of the season. They’re a great team, high intensity, making a lot of sprints, so we will find the right players to compete with them – and this is how we will pick the team.”

Glasner also gave his verdict on the news this afternoon that midfielder [Will Hughes had signed](https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/announcement/will-hughes-signs-new-crystal-palace-contract/) a new contract with the club until the summer of 2027.

“It’s not a surprise for me!” the manager joked. “It’s good. He’s had an excellent season for us.

“Also, his football, his passing, his fighting spirit are great, so I’m really pleased that we could extend his contract.”
