Eight years on, before tonight's clash with the Red Devils, Ambrose took a moment pre-match to give his view on the game, saying that the Eagles can "nick this game".
He expressed confidence in Palace's abilities, especially following their remarkable 4-1 win on the road against Leicester City, saying: "I think on our day we can beat anyone, we've shown that. We showed on the weekend that even off our day really, we can get the result. I say 'result', 4-1 with seven shots compared to 27 is a fantastic result.
"So today, I think if we walk away with a draw we'd be happy but, like I said, we can nick this game. Under the lights at Selhurst, there's no better feeling."
The Red Devils have taken a hit before this clash with a whole rack of injuries affecting their squad, but Ambrose feels that it's Palace's performance and their vociferous fans which will make the difference rather than the visitor's hurdles.
He said: "It's well documented that they have 10 injuries and there have been a few shouts of postponement that I've been hearing over the last few days which is comical, but if we go and attack them and get at them, I may feel more positive than a draw.
"The fans are always fantastic no matter what time of day but, like I said, it's special under the lights at Selhurst. The place will be rocking and I'm really looking forward to it."
And, of course, a Darren Ambrose chat before Crystal Palace face Manchester United would be completely incomplete without a reflection on 2011.
Thinking back, he said: "I'm looking forward to this game because it brings back a lot of fantastic memories for me. I have loads of good memories at Crystal Palace but that stands out. It stands out in my career.
"If you don't win trophies which I never did unfortunately, you're not often remembered but that goal keeps me remembered and stands out in my career. I'm looking forward to it but we'd take one off the knee from a yard out today to get a result."
Finishing up: one last question. Which was better, Andros Townsend versus Manchester City or Darren Ambrose against United?
"Definitely mine! And I think Andros would be saying that same as well..."
We're not convinced he would.
