As the game ticked on, their was a growing sense around Selhurst Park that Everton were there for the taking, as Roy Hodgson's side grew in every aspect.
Meyer was in full agreement that the south Londoners were more than deserving of all three points, and although its important to start the season unbeaten, the midfielder wanted the win: "Not [happy] with the one [point] because I think we deserved more because of the second half; we played really well and I think we deserved to win."
Meyer had a glorious opportunity to give the Eagles the lead, just moments after Jordan Ayew had failed to score from a similar position, but Jordan Pickford was equal to both attempts, and it is a moment that the former Schalke player believes he should've done better with: "I think I need to score from this position but it was a bit windy in this moment – that is not an excuse, I think I should score and I am sorry to the team."
With just under 15 minutes left, Marco Silva's side were reduced to 10-men with Morgan Schneiderlin given his marching orders for a second booking. Hodgson opted to bring on the fresh legs of Connor Wickham in the hope of making the man advantage count, however, Meyer discussed the difficulties of facing a team that are a player down: "We tried to score [and capitalise on the man advantage] but we were scared to get counter-attacked as Everton stayed deeper; it wasn’t easy for us to create chances but we did our best and hope we can win the next game."
