Through the years: Palace's Sash

In the long history of Crystal Palace kits – both home and away – one feature has made comeback after comeback: the sash.

With diagonals central again on the new 2021/22 PUMA home shirts this season, the red and blue sash made its first appearance into Palace folklore in the 1975/76 season under Malcolm Allison.

Then on a white background, the sash marked Palace’s successful run to the FA Cup semi-finals – but similarly exciting things were happening at the youth level too.

With a side packed with talents including Vince Hilaire, Terry Fenwick and Kenny Sansom, Palace’s youngsters would win the FA Youth Cup two years in a row.

Becoming the core of Terry Venables' young side, the sash on the Palace shirt came to embody the dynamic, youthful football that defined the ‘Team of the 80s’.

With a brand new Academy chock-full of promising talent and plenty of hungry, exciting youngsters in the first-team squad – many hailing from south London itself – it seems apt that the sash should return to the home strip once again.

But which are Palace’s best sash designs until now?

1977/80 Home

Not the original – but certainly the first to make a real impact. Nothing screams 1970s quite like a stylish Admiral number, with the red and blue trim and the V neck collar completing the look.

2008/09 Home

A return to a white home kit for the first time since the mid-1980s saw the sash emblazened across the Palace shirt once again, this time worn by Shaun Derry, Paddy McCarthy et al - with a young Nathaniel Clyne making his first, but by no means his last, Palace outing.

2013/14 Away

This time arrowing across a black background, Palace’s return to the Premier League was defined by this stylish shirt harking back to the gutsy sides that came before them.
