Tomkins looked back over the match and voiced his frustrations about losing while assessing how his team had performed, saying, "Chelsea, without creating too much, managed to score against us and we're bitterly disappointed with that. They didn't really cause us too much trouble, they dominated possession which you'd expect from a team like that, I'm just disappointed really in the manner we conceded the goal.
"The game today, it depends on what day you get Chelsea, you can get a good performance and win against anyone. You know, we beat Manchester City and that gave us confidence so we knew we could have got something if we were on our game. I don't think we were on our game today."
Having experienced mixed results over the festive period, including wins over Leicester City and Manchester City, Crystal Palace managed to add to their points tally well, but possibly could have found themselves higher up the table going into the New Year.
Looking over the past month, Tomkins said, "You win a couple and then you go and draw or lose a few so it's about that consistency, I think a few more points on the board is what we need. Let's not shy away from it, we're down there and it's going to be a fight."
However, if there's one positive to take from recent games, it's Palace's backline with the former West Ham captain at its core.
The 29-year-old said on keeping clean sheets, "I think it's massively important if you're going to survive in this league, we don't concede many goals or lose by many goals but we need to find that balance and consistency of doing that and then scoring at the other end. We need to start against Wolves and hopefully we'll get a good performance there."
Continuing his look ahead to Wednesday's match with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Tomkins remarked that it will be a difficult challenge but that his Palace side can tackle it head-first.
"They will be a tough game like every game is in the Premier League, they're a very difficult team. We found it hard to break them down the other week at our place and they nicked a goal so we need to go there full of confidence to play against a good team."
