Providing selfless running and strong hold-up play, Mateta made the most of his opportunities to get forwards, being involved in a breakaway at the end of the first-half which arguably could have seen City goalkeeper Ederson dismissed for a late challenge on the No. 14.
Mateta was later on hand to kickstart Palace's comeback with a poacher's finish from Jeffrey Schlupp's low cross on 76 minutes – his second goal in as many games.
He then demonstrated his perseverance in injury-time to win a loose ball inside the box ahead of Phil Foden, drawing a foul and winning Palace's dramatic penalty kick which Michael Olise converted to seal a point.
Mateta won 30.3% of supporters' votes after the match, with Academy midfielder David Ozoh – playing his most senior minutes in a game to date – second with 25.4% and goalkeeper Dean Henderson – on his Premier League debut for Palace – finishing third on 17.3%.
