### Turnstile Entry

The away fans section at Villa Park is located in the north east corner of the Doug Ellis Stand. The allocation is split in to two areas:

Tickets stating Doug Ellis Upper P – use turnstiles P87, P88, P88A and P89 for the upper tier. From ground level there are several flights of stairs to reach the upper concourse area (64 steps in total).

Doug Ellis Lower Q – use turnstiles Q91 to Q96B for the lower tier.

Should you arrive after kick-off, then turnstiles Q96 and / or P89 will remain open until the second-half has started.

### Travelling by coach

There are still spaces available on our away supporters coaches to Villa Park. ### Travelling by train

Witton station is the nearest station to Villa Park, and is also the nearest train station to the visiting supporters' seating at Villa Park. As well as regular services from Birmingham New Street, Witton station offers park & ride possibilities north of Villa Park on the Walsall line.

### Traffic Exclusion Zone

Please note that in the interest of pedestrian safety, a traffic exclusion zone (TEZ) is imposed around Villa Park on match days to exclude vehicles on the following roads: Witton Lane from the junction with Aston Hall Road to the traffic island at Witton Road, and Trinity Road between Nelson Road and Witton Lane.

The zone is in operation two hours prior to kick-off to approximately 30-60 minutes after the final whistle.

The precise timing is dependent upon traffic and pedestrian movement on the affected roads. Residents’ parking zones are in operation on match days. Villa strongly advise all supporters to use official car parks and avoid parking in residential areas. You will avoid the parking fine of £60 which you will incur for parking in within the residents’ zones.

### Accessibility at Villa Park

Visiting clubs have 14 wheelchair spaces which are located within the away section in the lower Doug Ellis stand, Q Blocks.

The wheelchair user positions are pitch side and have little cover – ponchos subject to availability are available during inclement weather. Villa recommend checking the forecast before travelling. Companions can sit adjacent to the wheelchair user. Wheelchair users can access the stadium via Gate 28, which is located next to the away ticket office and turnstiles.

Aston Villa is licensed to sell alcohol in the Doug Ellis Lower – Block Q only (alcohol will not be available in Doug Ellis Upper – Block P). Please note that no transfers can be permitted.

Villa advise visiting supporters in Doug Ellis Upper Tier – Block P to purchase a match programme from the official programme kiosks located on Witton Lane prior to entering the stadium. Due to limited facilities within the Upper Tier concourse area it is not always feasible for the club to sell programmes.

All families, home and away, are welcome at Villa Park's Family Fun Zone. The Fun Zone is a facility for families to enjoy a range of free activities for up to two hours before kick-off; this is located in the club's Academy building and includes activities such as face painting, large inflatables, games and activities. Production of a match ticket is required for entry.

The contents of bags will examined by a steward as you enter Villa Park. Larger bags and/or luggage cannot be taken into the stadium. There is no storage facility available for bags, back packs or luggage deemed too large to enter the stadium. Where possible, please do not bring any kind of bag.

### **What’s the story?**

A difficult run of results has put a temporary halt to Aston Villa's quest to qualify for the Champions League for a second successive season. 

It is now one win in six Premier League games under Unai Emery, seeing them slip down to ninth - although still just a point off Chelsea in third in a tightly contested race for Europe.

Add to that a defeat in Belgium to Club Brugge in the Champions League, and a defeat to Crystal Palace in the League Cup, and it is just one win in eight in all competitions since that remarkable victory over Bayern Munich at Villa Park.

Like so many professional football teams, Aston Villa were formed by a cricket side looking for a sport to play during the tempestuous winter months. Their first match came against a local rugby side, with the first-half played under rugby rules and the second under Association Football rules – somehow, Villa kept a clean sheet.

In 1876, Scotsman George Ramsay happened to spot the players training in Aston Park, and, having been asked to make up the numbers, impressed with his close control and skill on the ball. Soon he was made club captain and drew spectators to watch matches.

In 1888, Villa became one of the 12 founding members of the Football League, heading into the competition as the FA Cup holders. By now George Ramsay was manager, thought to be football’s first professional in the role, and he soon embarked on a golden period, winning six league titles and six FA Cups.

### **Christian Benteke**

#### (Villa 2012-2015, Palace 2016-2022)

A fans’ favourite with both clubs, Benteke was another player whose breakthrough into English football came in the claret and blue of Villa, a debut goal against Swansea heralding a sign of things to come. 

Nominated for PFA Young Player of the Year and scoring 49 times in 101 appearances, after arriving at Palace – following a challenging year at Liverpool – those instincts came to the fore once again, Benteke scoring 37 times in six years in south London, including that famous stoppage-time winner against Brighton.

### **Mile Jedinak**

#### (Palace 2011-2016, Villa 2016-2019)

The tough-tackling Australian, whose arrival at Selhurst provided so much of the heart behind Palace’s promotion push, also went on to work at Villa – the final club of his celebrated playing career – as Loan Player Development Coach, but joined Tottenham a year ago under Ange Postecoglou.

Jedinak captained Palace between 2011 and 2016, sensationally scoring an 89th-minute winner against Peterborough United on the final day of the 12/13 season to secure an eventually-profitable Championship play-off place.

He continued to serve the club with distinction in the Premier League – leading the Eagles out at Wembley in the 2016 FA Cup final – before moving to Villa in August of that year, where he played 80 times during three seasons in the Championship as the West Midlands side also won promotion via the play-offs.

### **Yannick Bolasie**

### (Palace 2012-2016, Villa 2018-2019 (loan))

A player who perhaps enjoyed his time in SE25 more than he did in the West Midlands, Bolasie’s creativity, pace and free-spirited attacking threat made him the perfect foil for Wilfried Zaha on the opposite flank, and an immediate fans’ favourite at Selhurst Park. 

Bolasie contributed an impressive 13 goals and 30 assists during 144 games at Palace, also helping the side to the Premier League and featuring in the 2016 FA Cup final, but moved to Everton in 2016 from where he was subsequently loaned out – for half a season – to Villa in their eventually-successful 18/19 promotion push, contributing to seven goals in 21 games.

### **Sam Johnstone**

#### (Villa 2015-2017, Palace 2019-2024)

Goalkeeper Johnstone made 70 appearances for the Villans over the course of two loan spells in the Championship, keeping more clean sheets than any other goalkeeper in the division during his first stay.

He kept 11 clean sheets in 34 appearances with Palace, earning a recall to the England squad, before departing for Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this year.

### **Jordan Ayew**

#### (Villa 2015-2017, Palace 2019-2024)

Another recent Palace star who once plied his trade in the West Midlands, Aston Villa was Ayew’s first English club, having moved there after breaking through at senior level in Ligue 1.

The Ghanaian forward scored his first Villa goal against a Swansea City side featuring elder brother Andre and finished as Villa’s top Premier League goalscorer in his debut season, before his eventual switch to SE25 – also via Swansea.

Ayew was a hit in South London, departing the club this summer for Leicester City with 212 appearances, 23 goals and 22 assists to his name.

### **Gary Cahill**

### (Villa 2004-2008, Palace 2019-2021)

One whose greatest glories perhaps came betwixt his spells at both clubs, yet solid centre-back Cahill’s earnest defending was appreciated by both Villa and Palace fans alike at either end of his career.

A Villa academy graduate who scored a remarkable overhead kick on only his fourth senior appearance – against Birmingham City, no less – England international Cahill would represent Burnley, Sheffield United, Bolton and Chelsea – where he won a spate of trophies – before playing at Palace for two seasons, playing 47 times. He retired in November 2022.

### **Gareth Southgate**

#### (Palace 1988-1995, Villa 1995-2001)

The most successful England manager of modern times, Southgate graduated from Palace’s youth system in 1990, having joined the club aged 16. He would later return to formally open Palace’s new Academy facilities after having made 191 appearances for the club, including captaining the club to the First Division title. 

Defensive stalwart Southgate was equally celebrated at Villa, lifting the League Cup in his first season in the West Midlands, reaching the 99/00 FA Cup Final and playing 243 times over six seasons before departing to Middlesbrough.

### **Sweden**

**My Cato**

In October, Cato captained Sweden U23's for their friendly against the Netherlands where she set up Sweden's only goal of the game in a 1-1 draw.

She then provided the assist for Indiah-Paige Riley's opener against Everton in the Barclays Women's Super League before scoring the first goal in Palace's 3-2 defeat at Villa Park.

Her stellar performances for Palace have earned her a second call-up to the Sweden senior team, and an opportunity to make her debut for the Blågult (The Blue-Yellow).

Speaking to Palace TV after she heard the news, Cato said: “It feels really good, it’s an honour and I’m really grateful for the opportunity.”

Sweden's path to Euro 2025 hinges on a crucial play-off against Serbia, with the first leg being held in Serbia on Thursday 28th November.

### **England**

**Brooke Aspin (Under-23)**

Brooke Aspin has been called up for England U23's upcoming games against Norway and Sweden, having featured in both of England's recent U23 friendly games against the Netherlands and Portugal. 

The Chelsea loanee has played twice so far for Palace in November, playing 90 minutes at centre-back against title chasing Manchester City before coming on at half-time against Aston Villa.

Aspin will first travel to the Fredrikstad Stadion in Norway on Thursday 28th November before England host Sweden in Doncaster on Monday 2nd December.

### **England**

**Lexi Potter (England Under-19s)**

Palace's Player of the Month Lexi Potter retained her spot in Lauren Smith's WU19 squad, as they begin their Euro 2025 qualification campaign against Turkey on Wednesday 27th November. 

England are in group A4, along with hosts Poland, Turkey and Italy.

Potter has had another strong month with Palace, playing 90 minutes against Manchester City, Everton and Aston Villa. She has played the most out of all the youngsters in the WSL this season.

**Katrine Veje & Mille Gejl**

Palace's Danish duo have been called up to the senior squad ahead of their friendly against Iceland on Monday 2nd December.

Denmark have already qualified for Euro 2025 after they finished 2nd in their A-tier qualification group.

During the last international break in October, Denmark faced South Africa and the Netherlands in friendly matches, with Veje and Gejl featuring in both games.

### **Wales**

**Josie Green & Lily Woodham**

Josie Green and Lily Woodham have been ever-present for Laura Kaminski's side this season, and both have been selected in Rhian Wilkinson's squad ahead of their Euro 2025 play-off against Ireland.

During the October international break, both Green and Woodham featured for Wales as they knocked out Slovakia in dramatic fashion to keep their Euro 2025 dreams alive. 

Wales will face the Republic of Ireland on Wednesday 27th November in the Euro 2025 play-off final.

### **Ireland**

**Izzy Atkinson & Abbie Larkin**

Abbie Larkin and Izzy Atkinson have been called up by Ireland manager Eileen Gleeson for their huge two-legged play-off against Wales. 

Larkin and Atkinson both featured for the Republic of Ireland in the previous round of Euro 2025 qualifiers, as Ireland breezed past Georgia to progress to the final round of play-offs.

They will face Palace teammates Josie Green and Lily Woodham on Friday 29th November, as Ireland travel to the Cardiff City stadium in Wales for the first leg.

As the last international break of 2024 approaches, several Palace players have been called up to represent their nations in crucial games across Europe.

#### **Charlton Athletic 2-2 Crystal Palace (06/09/20)**

This four-goal thriller was the first instalment of this South London rivalry in the Women's Championship. Charlton took the lead early on before Bianca Baptiste grabbed a well-worked equaliser on ten minutes.

32 minutes on the clock and Palace took the lead, thanks to a Cherelle Khassal strike from outside the box.

Palace held out until the 87th minute until Shauna Vassell tapped home at the back post to equalise for the hosts and send both teams away with a point.

#### **Charlton Athletic 3-2 Crystal Palace (22/10/23)**

During last season's successful promotion campaign, Palace visited the Valley in another thrilling instalment of this fixture.

Goals from Angela Addison and Kayleigh Green meant that the Eagles had to twice come from behind in the first-half, with Elise Hughes heading home a rebound and Araya Dennis scoring a stunning long-range equaliser just before the break.

It wasn't to be for Palace however, as Charlton grabbed the winner in the 76th minute through Melissa Johnson’s chipped effort.

An entertaining game and a tough result was Palace's first loss of the season, but despite the derby day disappointment, Laura Kaminski's Eagles would later go on to secure a historic promotion to the Barclays Women's Super league.

#### **Crystal Palace 3-2 Charlton Athletic (14/11/21)**

There were five goals at Hayes Lane in a dramatic edition of this South London derby. 

Featuring an early appearance of current Palace Women captain Aimee Everett, the Eagles raced into a two goal lead thanks to goals from Mia Farrow and Kirsty Barton.

Hollie Olding, who would go on to join Palace for the 2022/23 season, managed to get a goal back for Charlton on the 68th minute. Farrow managed to get her second and Palace's third just five minutes later, after she rounded the Charlton keeper and finished expertly into the corner.

Jess King's late goal for the visitors ensured a nervy finish, but Palace held on to claim the bragging rights.

Crystal Palace travel to the West Midlands to take on Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday, 23rd November (KO: 15:00 GMT) – here's how you can watch and follow the action LIVE!

He remains just one of five players to feature for England despite playing outside the top two divisions in the post-war period, making his debut under Walter Winterbottom against Northern Ireland in 1961.

Byrne joined the club shortly before his 16th birthday, after being recommended for trials by schoolteacher and former Palace player Vincent Blore – but he reportedly needed four trials before the south Londoners were truly convinced of his potential.

He starred for Palace in the youth sides, and represented England at youth level before signing a contract on his 17th birthday; he made his debut five months later. Success was not instantaneous, but after a season bedding in soon the goals began to flow.

Byrne became a hugely popular figure at Palace, earning the nickname ‘Budgie’ for his talkative nature on the pitch. His hold-up play, close control and passing range made him a star in south London, but caught the eye further afield, too.

Scoring 30 times in 1960/61 to fire Arthur Rowe’s side to promotion, a full international call-up beckoned.

Making his debut in a 1-1 draw, playing on the inside-left against Northern Ireland, kick-started a successful international career which would last five years and see him score eight times in just 11 games.

Byrne missed out on selection for the 1966 World Cup, however, despite continuing his goalscoring form at West Ham United, where the manager Ron Greenwood described him as ‘the English Di Stefano’.

Byrne passed away in 1999, but is remembered as a legend of both Crystal Palace and West Ham, and for his impact on the international stage – from the unlikeliest of places.

If you aren’t playing in the top-flight, it will take something special to catch the England manager’s eye. If you’re playing in the third tier, it will take something quite spectacular. On this day (22nd November) in 1961, Crystal Palace’s Johnny Byrne did just that.

Speaking to the media in his pre-match press conference, the Palace manager was pleased to welcome back several key players before the weekend.

"Will Hughes is back after his suspension," Glasner confirmed. "Chris Richards is also already in the squad, so he's available. 

"Jefferson Lerma is back and available, and Cheick Doucouré is ready to start after two weeks of very good training."

Despite being boosted by the return of Doucouré and others, the manager has taken the decision not to risk Ebere Eze for the trip to Villa Park.

"Ebs would like to be involved in tomorrow's game, but I took the decision not to take him with us to Villa," Glasner confirmed. 

"It's a little bit too risky. He trained during the week, but it's too near when it happened. When we see our schedule, we have to protect the players.

"When we see our schedule after the Villa game, which was eight games in December, we can't take any risks, so that's why Ebs is not involved in tomorrow's game.

"We had a long chat today, because he's very ambitious. He's a great guy, he worked really hard and he wanted to be with us. HE feels he's ready, and it's him who wants to play.

"Of course, I want him to play. But as I mentioned, we have to protect him.

"Therefore we said: 'OK, yes we lose \[him\] for one game, but we win eight or nine days. And maybe then we win eight games, and we all hope to win at the Emirates in the Carabao \[Cup\].

"Then we have 15 games in December and January, and we need him for 15 games not just for one."

The manager tried to allow his players a chance to rest over the break before the hectic Christmas period, although several players were busy representing their countries. 

"We decided, because of our schedule, that the whole first week was off," Glasner explained. "It was just the injured players or the rehab players coming back from injury, like Cheick.

"He trained here with our Under-21s. They had a friendly game with them, but all the others who had many games and will face many games, they had the first week off.

"Also for the staff it's important. We decided several weeks ago to take one week off. I'm used to have it around Christmas, but here in England it's different, so I think it was important for everybody to recover.

"But the second week was really good. Yes, we were still a small group because of some injuries, and the international players - Daniel Munoz had just two days training with us after playing two games with Colombia - but it was good. 

"It was a good week, good intensity. So we're going to Villa today, and we know we are missing some, especially attacking players, with Ebs, with Eddie \[Nketiah\], with \[Matheus\] Franca, with Daichi Kamada.

"We know this, but we think we have good chances to take at least a point. Of course we go there and, like always, the mindset is to get the win."

Oliver Glasner says that Cheick Doucouré is one of a number of players ready to return to the starting lineup against Aston Villa after an extended period out, but that Ebere Eze is still working towards full fitness.
