Crystal Palace can end Newcastle United's unbeaten run and book themselves a place in the fourth round of the League Cup with victory at St James' Park – read our in-depth preview below.
Wednesday will mark Palace’s third visit to St James’ Park this calendar year, and it has proved a tough place to go for Patrick Vieira’s side.
The Eagles secured a creditable draw in September as stellar goalkeeping display from Vicente Guaita resulted in a clean sheet and an important point on the road.
Before defeat in April, Palace’s last victory over Newcastle came in the north-east in February 2021, as goals from Gary Cahill and Jaïro Riedewald earned all three points.
Much was made of Palace’s strong form at Selhurst Park, but Sunday afternoon provided an until-then-elusive result: an away win. The Eagles won at Oxford United in the previous round away, but when facing Premier League opposition luck had been against them.
Then up stepped Michael Olise, whose 94th-minute winner at the London Stadium sent the travelling fans into raptures and secured three points against West Ham United.
“It’s been coming,” Vieira said after the game. “I think away from home we had some difficult games but overall our performances were quite good. I think today again it was a really good performance from the team.
“We still have a lot to improve, a lot to work on. We had enough possession and created enough to score more goals and make better decisions in the last third. Defensively we conceded too many situations. This is a really good win for the confidence but it doesn’t take away parts of the game we need to work on.”
There are few tougher tests at the moment than facing Newcastle United. After heavy investment over summer, Eddie Howe’s side sit third in the Premier League with six wins in their last seven games.
They have lost just once this season, to Liverpool in August, and look set to fight for the Champions League places.
The standout performer has been Miguel Almirón, who has been revitalised under Howe and who has been having his own Goal of the Month competition in October – it will be up to Palace to keep him quiet at St James’.
Cheick Doucouré returned to the midfield against West Ham, with Ebere Eze and Michael Olise ahead of him – and the starting trio made good on their manager’s faith. Eze stepped in to win the ball back and feed Wilfried Zaha for the equaliser, while Olise fired home the winner deep into stoppage time.
However, the League Cup is a chance to rotate the side and there could be opportunities for Will Hughes, Jaïro Riedewald and Luka Milivojević among others from the start – as well as Sam Johnstone in goal.
Newcastle have been driven in their form this season by Bruno Guimarães in midfield – but they have plenty of options should they choose to rest players.
Jonjo Shelvey, Joe Willock and Sean Longstaff could all start, while Chris Wood and Allan Saint-Maximin are options should Callum Wilson and Almirón drop to the bench.
