The Eagles development side continued their recent good form with a comfortable 3-0 win over the Queens Park Rangers development side, at their Harlington training ground.
QPR started the better of the two sides, having the biggest share of possession, and the first real chance of the game fell to them. A hopeful ball was played into the box and volleyed towards goal but the Palace stopper, Dion-Curtis Henry saved easily.
Palace grew into the game slowly. Great work from Nya Kirby involving some neat interplay between Kaikai and Lokilo ended with Lokilo being fouled in the box, but no penalty was given.
QPR responded by nearly taking the lead. Aramide Oteh rounded Henry but his shot on goal was superbly blocked by Tyler Brown. From the corner that followed, QPR should have taken the lead but Henry made a very impressive point blank save.
That was the last time Palace’s goal really came under threat. In the 17th minute a great piece of play by Levi Lumeka saw him beat two defenders and tee up Kian Flanagan. He then chipped a cross to the back post and Jason Lokilo volleyed home from inside the six-yard box.
It wasn’t long before the away side doubled their lead. A defence splitting pass from Nya Kirby in the 21st minute released Lokilo and he made no mistake, slotting the ball easily past the onrushing Martin Herdman.
It could so easily have been four for Palace two minutes later. Sullay Kaikai nodded over from six yards out and then Kian Flanagan fired wide when slipped through into the box.
The missed chances did not come back to haunt Richard Shaw’s side as in the 30th minute some neat passing with Lokilo, Kaikai and Kirby, saw Kirby get on the end of a one-two. He drove a shot across the face of the goal and Kaikai tapped in putting the game to bed.
QPR rarely threatened, and a volley from the edge of the box which Henry saved well was the last meaningful bit of action in the first half.
The second half continued in much the same way as the first. But the Eagles but did not have the cutting edge they showed in the first half.
The first meaningful chance of the second period came from QPR. However, Michael Phillips blocked the shot on the line and kept it at 3-0.
Palace’s best chance of the half was from a Pape Souare free-kick. Michael Phillips was fouled on the edge of the box and Souare’s effort was saved at the near post.
As the game drew to a close, QPR’s Charlie Owens was denied from 20 yards out by the woodwork.
That was the last attempt on the goal from either team and saw the Palace development side pick up their third win in as many games.
