“You could see how much it meant to me with the celebration and what a time to do it, I have waited a long time and enjoyed that one,” reflected the midfielder as he explained how the move came about to lead up to the chance for him to open his account in a Palace shirt.
“Patrick and I have a great understanding down that left hand side, the moment he got the ball there was a bit of eye contact for me to show him where I wanted the pass and he played it perfectly and I just had to concentrate on hitting the target, it went in so I am happy.”
Van Aanholt has had a hand in five of the goals in his last four Premier League games for the club.
The opening period of the match saw the home side begin Premier League life at a fast pace with Wayne Hennessey been called upon to deny Aleksandar Mitrovic twice and Cyrus Christie.
Schlupp was impressed with the opponents and knows that him breaking the deadlock was a crucial point in the game turning Palace’s way.
“They are a very good team and they play a system which means they keep the ball well so we had to dig deep, especially the first 25 minutes or so. We managed to do that and get the goal at an important time just before the break."
With 11 minutes of the game remaining Wilfried Zaha’s finish was to seal the perfect start to the season but Schlupp was quick to praise right back Aaron Wan-Bissaka's contribution in the lead up to the second goal of the afternoon. .
“What a player he is, he seems to be growing in confidence every game and is getting better and better. He did a great bit of play to slide in Wilf with a perfect ball and obviously the move was finished off which was very important for us,” commented Schlupp after a good day at the office for Roy Hodgson’s side.
